A brief movie review

Spider-Man 3: Wow. As third movies go, this actually made Pirates of the Caribbean 3 look polished and well-written in comparison.

I think I'll be giving this one a miss, no matter how cute Toby Maguire is.

Even if you watch the first two, which have their moments, skip the third.

Is it wrong to admit that I've never seen any of the Spiderman films?

I have, however, seen No Country For Old Men which led me to say numerous things like "Javier Barden looks like Cesare from 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' mixed with Mike Nesmith" or any sentence featuring Josh Brolin's name. Only you can appreciate the the Nez allusion...

I'm also a Nez fan.

Not missing a whole lot on the Spidey flicks; they're light entertainment. I need to catch up on my artsier films. And yep, Nez allusions are always welcome! Barden even has the denim jacket like him...

Alert: Spiderman 3 is getting "the treatment" from MST3K alums: http://www.rifftrax.com/rifftrax/spiderman-3

Oh, how awesome! I'd forgotten about the Rifftrax project. And they've done LOTR:FOTR too...hmm, I must see about downloading some of these. Thanks!

The LOTF RiffTrax is funny but not their best work. My favorites of the ones I've seen so far are:

Star Wars Episode 1 - Hilarious riffing of a movie that richly deserves to be mocked.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the Gene Wilder version) - I actually love this movie unriffed, but Mike and guest riffer Neil Patrick Harris' treatment of it is great.

Ooh, ep 1 really does deserve it. I must try one of these sometime.

I just heard Neil Patrick Harris on an NPR episode of "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me." Even on that he was really funny, and seemed like a truly pleasant guy as well.

I'd never seen The Phantom Menace before and was absolutely gobsmacked by how bad it was. I don't think I could have gotten through it unriffed.

Neil Patrick Harris rules. He did a promo for the E! network a few years back in which he said, "You're watching the True Hollywood Story - may I never be on it." That cracked me up. Plus he's an awesome musical theater actor. He's even got a Buffy connection - he's good friends with How I Met Your Mother costar Alyson "Willow" Hannigan.

Ep. 1--agh, I know. Was Jar-Jar the most awful thing you ever saw in your life or what? And you could practically feel Ewan MacGregor sinking into depression for having to be in it.

Evidently Harris was the emcee in Cabaret on stage recently. Bet that was a pretty sight!

Hey, I've got an Engrish-subtitled version of this one, too! I have really got to get to work on posting those. What's stopping me is that to capture the screens, I'll have to watch the movie again.

Yeeks, God almighty, that would stop anybody!

Okay, uh, why did you seek out bootlegs of these films anyway? Was that before you knew they sucked, or what? It's just, I can really think of better films to go to jail over. ;)

Gifts from students: They know that sort of thing amuses me. (So I think that leaves me in the clear, legally.) But even with the entertainingly mistranslated subtitles I could only watch the first five minutes or so of this one.

Lucas managed to get a bad performance out of everyone in the film except for Liam Neeson and Pernilla August (Anakin's mom).

Ewan MacGregor seems to suffer from a touch of Michael Caine Syndrome - i.e., he's not always terribly discerning about the films he does. I love him, but he's made some bad career choices.

As for Jar Jar - what on earth were they thinking? The mind boggles.

Oh, and here's Neil Patrick Harris in Cabaret

Yeah, Jude Law has that Michael Caine syndrome too. In fact, I could probably make a long list of actors who do...

Ooh, NPH can sing and dance like a sexy thing indeed! I may need to sit back and watch his version vs. Alan Cumming's version, numerous times, just to decide whose nuances I prefer. ;)
