PSA: Aurora Borealis

Apparently we're due for some sunspot/solar flare activity today, so your cell phone might refuse to cooperate for a little while. However, it also means that we in the lower 48 might get to see some Northern Lights! Well, "as far south as Oregon and Illinois," anyway...

One of my coworkers says she saw them here in Seattle last night, so that sounds promising.

I saw a thing about the solar flares on the news this morning and that was the first thing I thought of, even though the report didn't mention it. I got to see the aurorae once before, last summer, and it was amazing. I hope I can see it again!

I work at a hotel in Alaska, and we actually have a wake-up call list if the Northern Lights are spotted. However, its been cloudy here so I don't think we'll get to see them this time. I just saw them last weekend on my way home, though, and they were a spectacular display of emerald green, pink, white, and a splash of red. Even though I see them all the time I still get amazed every time they come out.

A common job in Alaska, apparently. :) A relative who works for a cruise line says the ships have the same aurora wake-up deal. I've still never seen them, so I hope they come through for us tonight!
